I believe in daily improvement not because I need to be the best man I can be, but because it will give me the life I want and not the life that will get handed to me.
Daily improvement is something fairly new to me.
Growing up in Puerto Rico I did not think of daily improvement as a way of life. Back then, my primary concerns were how much fun I will have that day, what beach I had the best crowd, what party could attend, fast cars, and girls.
Contrary to the rest of my family, I used to seek danger, and excitement every single day. My family used to say I was the crazy one.
Raised by a single mother and the support of an extraordinary family I had the best example a young man could have. My family is simple and a hard working one with old school traditions. Meaning no bad words, I must eat at the table with the rest of the family and one particular believe. “Graduate from school, can get a good job.” I guess that counts as an improvement.
Good people still exist in this crazy world
Who knows, life might have been different for me if my dad was still alive, but even now I can not complain about my family. My family is a constant reminder that good people still exist in this crazy world.
I was two years old when my father died of natural reasons. My mom was nine months pregnant with my only sister. I spend my early years between school, sports, and my grandparents. My mother did the best she could to keep me busy.
It was not until 1996 when I join the United States Air Force that I started hearing again and again about continuous improvement and that I was a big part of it.
Daily improvement is the continuous improvement and is a big part of today’s Air Force Smart Operations for the 21st century. You are almost required to identify and implement steps to improve processes and eliminate waste.
Doing this will help the Air Force grow lean. One day I decided to participate in a week-long training. During this training, I learned techniques from lean, six-sigma, the theory of constrained and business process re-engineering and how this process will help me progress from assessing my current situations to measuring results after implementing improvements.
Quickly I noticed how I could improve practically anything in my life using the same techniques.
So I started implementing small changes to improve my productivity, personal and business relationships, finances, organization, spiritual and mental well-being, health and physical fitness and leisure.
Do you want better results?
I believe in daily improvement because it has re-energize my life, it allowed me to walk through many doors before others. Today I am a happier person, a person with a purpose thanks to daily improvement.
