How to Use the Pareto Principle to Your Marketing Advantage

How to Use the Pareto Principle to Your Marketing Advantage

Suppose you have a lot on your plate. You feel overwhelmed or tight on time; the Pareto Principle or the 80 20 rule is one of the most helpful concepts for life, business, and time management.

The Pareto Principle suggests that two out of ten items, on your to-do list, worth more than the other eight put together.

So, shouldn’t you learn how to use the Pareto Principle to your advantage?

First, the Pareto Principle doesn’t suggest that you work less. It is for you to focus your efforts on what matters the most while accepting it’s sometimes okay to let the smaller stuff slide.

  1. Make a list of the 10 things you spend the most time on.
  2. Pick the two that truly drive your results and do more of those.
  3. Look at the others. Eliminate, automate, and outsource what you can.

How to apply the Pareto Principle to marketing?

For example, I’m a marketing manager and one I spend most of my time doing marketing tasks.

  1. Answering and replying to emails
  2. Analyzing analytics
  3. Planning content marketing for clients
  4. Posting on social media on the client’s behalf
  5. Sending email newsletters on behalf of clients
  6. Coordinating marketing activities for clients.
  7. Monitoring what people are saying about clients
  8. Recording marketing videos
  9. Taking photos to be used for social media marketing
  10. Producing livestreams for clients

Pick the 2 that truly drive your results and do more of those.

  1. Posting on social media
  2. Analyzing analytics

What’s left is to eliminate, automate, and outsource what we can.

Quick Win: Many people waste an insane amount of time looking for what to share on social media. A good marketing habit is not spending time looking for what to post on social media, instead use that time to post what’s important. Figure out what’s working and focus your time and energy on resharing, or expand on the topic.

Using the 80/20 rule is just a better way of executing content marketing. Share what your audience already likes, and if you want to expand on a topic, it will take you less time.
